Care Instructions
Our kimonos are made from traditional 100% Japanese silk and are very delicate. To preserve their beauty and structure, please follow the guidelines below.
In general, professional dry cleaning only is strongly recommended. Home washing of fully tailored silk kimonos with lining and inner layers is considered very risky, even for professionals.
1. Professional Care (Recommended)
Tailored kimonos have multiple layers (outer fabric, lining, and interlining). Silk shrinks when exposed to water, and each layer shrinks differently. Washing at home can cause severe distortion and permanent damage.
- Professional dry clean only — preferably by specialists experienced with kimono or delicate fabrics.
- Spot cleaning and stain removal should be handled by professionals.
2. Daily Care at Home (No Washing)
- After wearing, hang the kimono indoors in a well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight and let it air out overnight.
- Gently brush off dust from the hem and sleeves with a soft garment brush.
- Check the collar and other areas for makeup or stains. If you notice anything serious, consult a professional cleaner as soon as possible.
3. If You Must Wash at Home (Not Recommended)
For most vintage and high-end kimonos, home washing is not recommended and is at your own risk.
- Use only a neutral detergent suitable for silk.
- Use water below 30°C / 86°F. Do not use hot water.
- Do not rub or twist. Gently press the fabric in water.
- Do not wring. Instead, place the kimono between towels and press to remove excess water.
- Dry indoors in the shade, away from direct sunlight.
Important Notes
- Do not hand wash pieces with gold leaf, embroidery, or special finishes. These should always be taken to a kimono specialist.
- Do not tumble dry.
- For ironing, use low heat with a pressing cloth and avoid direct contact with the silk surface.
